Apr 25, 2011 7:52 PM

Jimmer Fredette signed a deal with New York-based production company Tupelo-Honey Productions to chronicle his life in the days leading up to the NBA draft, June 23 in Newark.

Fredette committed to allow Tupelo-Honey to shoot more than 100 hours of footage over 30 days. The New York-based production company plans to sell online and mobile vignettes and packaged 30-minute TV shows.

No programming has been sold yet, but Tupelo-Honey President Cary Glotzer said he’s already been having discussions and plans to sell footage to several outlets.

Davies Plans To Play For BYU Next Season

Apr 22, 2011 8:13 PM

BYU center Brandon Davies, who was dismissed from the team on March 1 because of an honor-code violation, plans to play for the Cougars next season.

Davies completed his winter semester work Thursday and withdrew from school, but he hopes to re-enroll in the fall.

According to BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins, Davies is working with the dean of students on a possible return.

If he meets certain conditions, Davies will be allowed to re-enroll in school and play basketball in 2011-12.

“There’s a pretty long list of people that I’d like to thank who are helping me through this difficult time,” Davies said in a statement released through BYU.

Fredette Files To Trademark Variations Of His Name

Apr 21, 2011 10:23 AM

Now that Jimmer Fredette's NCAA eligibility is over, he is free to market himself and pocket the profits.

Earlier this week, five sports agents flew to Provo and made presentations to Jimmer. When school is out this month, he'll return to his home in New York, where his parents and brother T.J. will review the final four agents and pick one.

Jimmer's representatives have already filed to trademark several variations of his name.

"We'll see how that goes," Fredette said.

BYU Requests Fredette Stop Attending Classes

Apr 11, 2011 2:52 PM

Jimmer Fredette’s celebrity has reached a feverish pitch at Brigham Young University. So much so that he's stopped going to classes.

That is not unusual for college basketball stars who plan to make their living in the NBA, but in this case it was the school that requested it.

"It was getting too disruptive," said Al Fredette, Jimmer's father, who explained that Jimmer's fame in Provo, Utah, has led to constant requests for autographs and photographs. "He can't go anywhere in Provo without being recognized."

Jimmer now does all his schoolwork online.

UNLV Tabs BYU Assistant Dave Rice As Head Coach

Apr 11, 2011 10:09 AM

BYU associate head coach Dave Rice accepted an offer Sunday to become the new coach at UNLV.

Rice, who played for Jerry Tarkanian on UNLV's back-to-back Final Four teams in the early 1990s before an 11-year run as a Rebels assistant, spent next to no time getting to work.

The Sun confirmed through multiple sources that San Diego State assistant Justin Hutson will officially become the first member of Rice's staff. Hutson spent the last five seasons heading up SDSU's recruiting efforts and coordinating the Aztecs' defense — both areas which contributed heavily to SDSU's storybook 2010-11 season that ended with a Sweet Sixteen berth.

Rumors are already flying regarding the other three spots on the staff — two assistant spots and a Director of Basketball Operations post — including some involving UNLV great, current Denver Nuggets assistant and former Rice teammate Stacey Augmon.

Fredette Captures Wooden Award

Apr 9, 2011 2:30 PM

Jimmer Fredette won the John R. Wooden Award as college basketball's player of the year Friday night, receiving 3,761 votes.

"I definitely enjoyed the ride," he told reporters. "I had a great time being with my coaches and my teammates. It was the most fun I ever had in my life."

Kemba Walker was second with 3,356 in voting that closed before the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.

The honor was Fredette's sixth national-player-of-the-year award.

"I have a pretty small house in New York, so I'm not sure I can fit them all in. It's been surreal. I've been all over and met a lot of great people," he said, naming Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Clyde Drexler and Olympic track and field starCarl Lewis.

Fredette had 15 30-point games and four 40-point efforts in his remarkable final season.

Sullinger Wins Pomeroy's Player Of The Year Award

Apr 7, 2011 6:23 PM

Statistical wizard Ken Pomeroy crowned Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger the tempo-free player of the year.

Sullinger posted a 120.4 offensive rating while using 27% of the Buckeyes’ possessions while he was on the floor. The Buckeyes’ center also ranked in the top 50 nationally in both offensive and defensive rebounding percentage, and fouls drawn per minute.

Pomeroy calculates his rankings using offensive rating and possessions used, as well as Dean Oliver’s measure of individual defensive stops.

UConn’s Kemba Walker (.521), BYU’s Jimmer Fredette (.487), Duke’s Nolan Smith (.472), Purdue's JaJuan Johnson (.450), San Diego State's Kawhi Leonard (.421), Wisconsin's Jon Leuer (.419), Texas' Jordan Hamilton (.401), Wisconsin's Jordan Taylor (.391), and Kentucky's Terrence Jones (.390) rounded out the top ten.

Rice, Theus Among Finalists For UNLV Job

Apr 6, 2011 10:23 AM

UNLV named its four finalists, announcing that St. John's assistant Mike Dunlap, Timberwolves assistant Reggie Theus, former Oregon coach Ernie Kent, and BYU associate head coach Dave Rice will continue on in the interview process.

"Over the last several days, we have been involved in an exhaustive and thorough search to find the best person for our vacant men's basketball head coaching position," UNLV Athletic Director Jim Livengood said in the release. "The list has been narrowed to four outstanding candidates and I'm looking forward to continuing the interview process. We are looking forward to naming our new head coach very soon."

Sources have consistently reiterated to the Sun this week that Rice, who played on UNLV's back-to-back Final Four teams in 1990 and 1991 and was an 11-year Rebels assistant coach, is the guy to beat.

Fredette Patterned Game After Nash

Apr 4, 2011 4:45 PM

BYU guard Jimmer Fredette, in an interview with XTRA Sports 910’s Bickley and MJ, said he’s patterned much of his game after two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash.

“I’ve watched him my entire life and he’s been a big influence in my game, just the way that he can get into the lane and be able to finish at the rim, no matter how he shoots it,” Fredette said. “And just how he can handle the ball and nobody can take it from him. He’s almost daring them to come get it so he can go by them.”

Fredette is confident he can make an impact in the NBA.

“It’s definitely going to be an adjustment, just like from high school to college, college to NBA is an even bigger difference,” Fredette said. “And I realize that, but I’m determined to play well. I’m determined to go out there and make a name for myself. I know I can do it, as long as I go out there and play my game, play well. I just have to earn the respect of my teammates and everybody in the organization and I know if I do that, I’m going to have a successful career.”

Apr 4, 2011 10:10 AM

BYU guard Jimmer Fredette, the regular season NCAA scoring leader, was named the winner of the 2011 Naismith Award, given to the national player of the year.

Fredette has now won the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the Associated Press Player of the Year award, the Adolph Rupp Award, Naismith Award and the NABC honor. All five are given annually to the top player in college basketball.

Perhaps the most prestigious player of the year honor, the John R. Wooden Award, will be announced Friday at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in California.

If Fredette wins that award, he will be considered the consensus player of the year.
